Terms of Service

Last updated: June 2026

Truelo operates in Montreal and the Greater Montreal Area, Quebec, Canada. These terms are written for that jurisdiction. They are a plain-language summary of how the platform works and are not legal advice; your tenancy is governed by your lease and Quebec law.

1. Acceptance of Terms

By creating an account or using Truelo, you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, you may not use the platform. We may update these terms from time to time; we will update the date below and, where the change is significant, notify you. Continued use after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance.

2. Who Can Use Truelo

You must be at least 18 years old — the age of majority in Quebec — and legally able to enter into binding agreements. By registering, you confirm that the information you provide is accurate and that you will keep it up to date. Truelo reserves the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms.

3. Truelo Is a Marketplace, Not a Party to Your Lease

Truelo is a technology platform that helps tenants and landlords find one another through listings. Truelo is not a landlord, property manager, real estate brokerage, or party to any lease (bail), and we do not provide legal advice. Any tenancy you enter into is between you and the other party and is governed by the Civil Code of Québec (articles 1851–1978) and your lease. Disputes about the tenancy itself — such as rent, maintenance, eviction, or your rights as a tenant or landlord — fall under the jurisdiction of the Tribunal administratif du logement (TAL), not Truelo. You cannot waive rights granted to you by the Civil Code of Québec or any other mandatory provincial legislation.

4. Listings and Landlord Responsibilities

Landlords are responsible for the accuracy and legality of their listings and for complying with all applicable laws, including the Civil Code of Québec and the mandatory standard-form lease (bail-type) required under Quebec law. Listings go live immediately on publishing; we review listings that are reported to us. You may not post listings for properties you do not own or are not authorised to rent. Landlords and other users must not discriminate against tenants on any ground protected by the Quebec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms (Charte des droits et libertés de la personne) — including race, colour, sex, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity, civil status, age, religion, political convictions, language, ethnic or national origin, social condition, or disability. Misleading, fraudulent, discriminatory, or duplicate listings will be removed and may result in account termination.

5. Payments

Truelo does not process, hold, or guarantee rental payments. Rent and any deposit are arranged and paid directly between the tenant and the landlord; Truelo is a listings marketplace and is not a party to the payment. We recommend you view the room in person before paying anyone. Quebec law does not permit landlords to collect any deposit, including security, damage, pet, or key deposits, so you should not be asked to pay one. If anyone asks you for such a deposit, do not pay it.

6. Viewing and Applying in Person

Truelo is built around seeing a room in person before you commit. Tenants should arrange a viewing, meet the landlord, and confirm the room matches the listing before applying to rent or paying anything. If something is wrong — for example, the unit is not as described or is unavailable — do not proceed, and report the listing to us so we can review it. Because Truelo is not a party to your payment, any money you pay is arranged directly with the landlord and handled under the terms you agree with them.

7. Fees

Listing a room and browsing Truelo are free. The only fee we charge is optional: a listing boost fee a landlord may choose to pay to promote a listing. Truelo does not charge a fee on rent, deposits, or any other amount arranged between you and the other party, and any fee we do charge is disclosed before you pay it. As a consumer, you keep all rights and remedies available to you under the Consumer Protection Act (Loi sur la protection du consommateur) of Quebec; nothing in these terms limits those rights.

8. Prohibited Conduct

You may not use Truelo to engage in fraud, harassment, discrimination, or any illegal activity. You may not post false reviews, impersonate other users, or scrape or misuse platform data. Violations may result in immediate account termination and reporting to relevant authorities.

9. Privacy

Your personal information is processed in accordance with our Privacy Policy, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), and Quebec's Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector (Law 25).

10. Dispute Resolution

Because Truelo does not process or hold rental payments, payment disputes are between the tenant and the landlord directly. If a listing or user appears fraudulent, misleading, or unsafe, report it to us and we will review it, and may remove the listing or terminate the account. Nothing in this section requires you to give up your right to bring a claim in court, including the Division des petites créances (Small Claims Division) of the Court of Quebec, or to participate in a class proceeding — those consumer rights cannot be waived under the Consumer Protection Act (Loi sur la protection du consommateur). Disputes about the tenancy itself are handled by the Tribunal administratif du logement.

11. Limitation of Liability

Truelo provides a platform connecting renters and landlords. We are not responsible for the condition of properties, the conduct of users, or disputes that arise outside our platform. To the extent permitted by law, our liability is limited to the fees you paid to us in connection with the transaction in dispute. Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law, including your non-waivable rights under the Consumer Protection Act (Loi sur la protection du consommateur).

12. Governing Law and Jurisdiction

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Quebec and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein. Subject to your non-waivable consumer rights and to the jurisdiction of the Tribunal administratif du logement over tenancy disputes, you agree that the courts of Quebec have jurisdiction over any dispute arising from your use of the platform. If any provision of these terms is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in full effect.
